Verrucae

Corns and verruca are often confused, and we see both frequently in our podiatry clinic.

There are many different types of verruca - you may just have one large one or many spread over both feet.  Typically they appear cauliflower like with little black dots on them.  They are found on feet of all ages most commonly on the soles and toes.  The virus thrives in warm damp conditions typically swimming pools and changing rooms.

Corns are found under areas of higher pressure and appear glassy. They tend to be painful when pushed where as verruca are painful when squeezed. Corns are often found when people have callus (hard skin).

Verruca can be painful and cause embarrassment, at Flo Paul Podiatry we have reviewed the evidence on various forms of treatment and are pleased to offer a range of options.  We will provide you with a thorough understanding of the verruca virus (Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)) and will clearly explain the treatment choices so you can make an informed decision.

Please see the Verruca section for recommended treatment options provided at Flo Paul Podiatry.

Fungal infections

Fungal infections, such as athlete's foot or fungal nail infections, are commonly seen and treated conditions.  Symptoms may include itching, redness, scaling skin, or thickened, discoloured nails. Podiatrists use a range of treatment options, including topical or oral antifungal medications, laser therapy, nail debridement and hygiene education to prevent recurrence.

Early treatment helps avoid the spread and worsening of the condition.

Athletes Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet.  Symptoms often include itching, burning, redness and peeling, especially between the toes.  It can spread in damp environments like changing rooms and showers. Podiatrists treat athlete’s foot with antifungal creams, powders, or oral medications, and may also recommend foot hygiene practices and footwear changes to prevent reinfection. Prompt treatment can relieve discomfort and stop the infection from spreading.

Bacterial and wound infections

Bacterial and wound infections of the feet can occur from cuts, blisters, or ulcers, especially in individuals with Diabetes or poor circulation. These infections may present with redness, swelling, warmth, pain, or discharge. Podiatrists manage these conditions by cleaning and dressing wounds, prescribing antibiotics, performing debridement if needed, and monitoring healing closely.

Diabetic Foot Infections

Diabetic foot infections are a complication of diabetes, often resulting from minor injuries or ulcers that go unnoticed due to reduced sensation. These infections can progress quickly if not treated promptly. Podiatrists play a key role in managing diabetic foot infections through wound care, infection control with antibiotics, debridement, pressure relief, and regular monitoring to promote healing and prevent recurrence.
