Nail Cutting
Flo Paul Podiatry offers a professional toenail cutting service. This service is provided for individuals who may have difficulty trimming their nails themselves due to age, medical conditions, or mobility issues.
Seeing a podiatrist for toenail cutting is especially beneficial for people with diabetes, poor circulation, arthritis, or thickened or ingrown nails, as these conditions can increase the risk of complications.
Our podiatrists ensure nails are cut properly, to prevent issues like ingrown toenails, infections, or damage to surrounding skin. Improper nail cutting can lead to painful conditions, bacterial or fungal infections, and delayed healing, particularly in people with compromised immune systems. Regular visits to a podiatrist can help prevent these risks and support overall foot health.
Please book a Podiatrist initial consultation and treatment appointment or for subsequent visits a podiatrist simply nails appointment.
Thickened Nails
Thickened toenails, also called onychauxis, are toenails that have become noticeably denser, bulkier, or higher than normal. They might also appear discolored (yellowish, brownish, or whitish), rough, brittle, and more difficult to trim.
Common Causes of Thickened Toenails
Fungal infections (onychomycosis): Probably the most common cause. Fungi invade the nail bed and cause the nail to thicken, discolour, and sometimes crumble.
Trauma: Repeated injury or a single major injury (like stubbing your toe) can damage the nail matrix, causing thickened growth.
Aging: As people age, nails naturally grow slower and thicker.
Psoriasis: This skin condition can also affect nails, leading to thickening, pitting, and discoloration.
Peripheral vascular disease: Poor blood flow to the toes can alter nail health.
Diabetes: Often linked to poorer circulation and increased risk of fungal infections.
Genetics: Some people inherit a tendency toward thicker nails.
Nail dystrophies: Other underlying diseases or conditions can lead to abnormal nail development.
Our Podiatrists are able to identify the cause of your thickening nails, trim and thin your nails using specialised tools. This will make them easier to manage and reduce discomfort.
If there is a fungal infection a treatment plan can also be discussed and recommendations made.
For clients with ongoing issues like diabetes or psoriasis we can advise and provide a treatment plan.
We are also able to recommend proper footwear, hygiene practices, and strategies to prevent worsening or recurring issues.

Fungal Nail Infections
Fungal nail infections, known as onychomycosis, occur when fungi invade the nail, causing it to become thickened, discolored, brittle, and sometimes crumbly. Initially the nail is damaged by trauma and then exposure to fungi in warm, moist environments like gyms and pools.
The podiatrists at Flo Paul Podiatry can help by diagnosing the infection, trimming and thinning the affected nail, prescribing effective antifungal treatments (topical or oral), and offering advice to prevent recurrence.

Ingrowing Toe Nails
Ingrowing toenails afflict people of all ages but are more likely in the teenage and the older population. They occur when the edge of a toenail, usually on the big toe, grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection.
They are often caused by improper nail trimming (cutting nails too short or rounding the edges), wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, injury, or having naturally curved nails.
Podiatrists can treat ingrowing toenails by gently lifting the nail edge, removing the problematic section of the nail, treating any infection, and providing advice to prevent recurrence.
In recurring or severe cases, they may perform a minor surgical procedure to permanently remove part or all of the affected nail.
Please book a Podiatrist initial consultation and treatment appointment or for subsequent visits a podiatrist simply nails appointment . However, if you have a new/painful wound an Emergency appointment would be appropriate.
