Systemic Diseases &  Cancer

Systemic Diseases

A systemic disease is a condition that impacts the whole body rather than a single localised area and can cause wide spread disruption and symptoms.

There are several systemic diseases that can affect the health of your feet.  Commonly seen conditions seen and treated at Flo Paul Podiatry include diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson's disease and neurological conditions.  Conditions of this nature can have an affect on the overall health of the feet and your ability to walk comfortably.

If your are experiencing any problems with your feet please book an appointment and we would be happy to assess and advise on the best treatment for you.

We Treat Feet Affected By Any Disease including:

  • Diabetes
  • Gout
  • Rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis
  • Neurological conditions
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Polymyalgia Rheumatica
  • Cancer
  • Or any other disease that may cause foot pain or issues.

Diabetes

Individuals with diabetes are at a greater risk of having foot problems which can escalate quickly.  This is due to high blood sugar (glucose) levels which damage the nerves and small blood vessels in their feet.  The nerve damage is known as peripheral neuropathy and means that you may not feel any injury to your foot which may result in infection and potentially a foot ulcer.

Addressing foot concerns immediately and taking care of your feet regularly will prevent serious issues.  The podiatrists at Flo Paul Podiatry are highly qualified and regularly attend training sessions so they are up to date with current practices.  In addition we have links with our NHS colleagues to refer on, if required.  Meaning that we can ensure that any foot emergency is delt with in a timely and effective way.

We also offer regular  appointments to carry out nail and skin care for our diabetic cliental as well as annual checks for those people with no concerns.

How Podiatry Can Help People With Disease and Cancer

We regularly see patients with a wide range of systemic diseases and podiatry treatment can help in a number of ways.  At each appointment whilst we  carry out your treatment ,  we will also be checking for any changes to your skin, circulation, foot comfort and overall well being.  Podiatry treatment can help in the following ways:-

  • Home foot care advise, including the use of an appropriate moisturiser.
  • Annual  foot health checks to assess your circulation, nerve responses and skin condition.
  • Treatment in any high pressure areas which can result in callus (hard skin) or corns.
  • Foot wear review and advice on selecting appropriate shoes and socks.
  • Prescribe insoles and orthotics to make walking more comfortable.  In addition orthotics can be used to reduce pressure points under the foot which could lead to ulceration.
  • Advise on lower limb exercises to improve mobility
